1 – Service Heating Systems

• schedule a professional HVAC inspection and maintenance, or do a DIY cleaning
• change any filters

2 – Winterize Outdoor Plumbing

• drain and disconnect garden hoses
• insulate any faucets and pipes exposed to the weather to prevent freezing

3 – Clean Gutters & Downspouts

• remove leaves, twigs, and debris to prevent clogs
• ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation

4 – Trim Trees Near Roof & Home

• trim branches that are close to your home to prevent damage during winter storms

5 – Service Fireplace & Chimney

• ensure the chimney is still clean and free of debris if you had a professional service completed in the spring
• if you didn’t get a professional inspection and cleaning of your fireplace and chimney in the spring, book early before beginning use again
• if you have a fireplace, stock up on fuel like firewood or pellets

6 – Check Weatherstripping

• test all detectors and replace batteries if needed
• install new detectors if they are older than 10 years

• ensure tape is in working order to avoid frozen pipes
